Bute Street, Liverpool ,
Get Into Reading is our innovative social outreach project, which delivers over 275 weekly community read aloud groups, which meet in a variety of settings including community centres, libraries, care homes, schools and drug rehabilitation units, Although the groups are based mainly in Merseyside and London, the development of Read to Lead Training means that they are spreading across the UK. “I read about other people, but learn about myself.” GIR member What’s different about these groups is that short stories, novels and poems are read aloud with one of our trained facilitators, which provides immediate engagement with the text for group members. The groups encourage and facilitate discussion and contemplation about what is being read, which is enriched by the spontaneous sharing of life stories and experiences as confidence builds over time. The groups meet week-in-week-out, providing valuable structure and support.
